Chasing Story

I’ve talked a lot on here recently about story. We are all living a story and we all need to work hard to make it a story worth telling. One we aren’t afraid to tell and one that we can tell ALL of the details without shame or fear.

We spent all of yesterday driving from Kansas City MO to Nashville TN. It was a time of reflection for me as I was turned down for a REALLY great job the night before we left.

I wanted this job to be the fairy tale ending to 7 years of running my own company. It was going to pay quite well and would have been an example of a guy with no degree landing a great job based on his experience. Yeah, I had it all planned out in my mind. I was going to get on here today and talk about it and use that story line to encourage others.

Now I’m faced with a turn in the story that I hadn’t planned. That’s how story works out most of the time anyway, isn’t it? We try to choose the story that we want but so often our story chooses us. We then have to take what has been given to us and live it in a way that continues the story we want to tell. As bad as I want to, I can’t crawl into a corner and feel sorry for myself. I have to take this experience and grow with it and integrate it into my story in a way that stays consistent with the story I ultimately want to tell.

Happy Thanksgiving and take this opportunity to give thanks for the parts of your story that you love the most!

    James,

Sorry to hear you were turned down. I know that can be quite a bummer. Don’t think about it too much and enjoy your time in Nashville. I hope you are going there to do something fun.

Although I know and can feel your very deep disappointment over the loss of this dream opportunity, I am encouraged because I know that you are the kind of person who is tenacious enough to keep turning the pages, to keep living the story of your life in a positive, forward-moving way, and that happier times will be ahead. The foundation that you and your wife are laying down for your lives, and for your childrens’ lives, is the kind of solid foundation upon which a LIFE can be built. And it is being built, day by day. I hope you are all having a wonderful Thanksgiving.
